Best Rooms for Carpets in Minneapolis

We love carpets. Carpets are soft, comfortable, and have their benefits to your Minneapolis home. While carpet is nice to have in some rooms, it isn’t great for all of the rooms in your house. If you are building your home, replacing the flooring in your home, or just getting ideas for the future, you’ll want to get ideas for where is the best place for carpet and where is the best place for hard floors. We’ll list from the best rooms to have carpets to the worst.

Playrooms

If there is any one room to have carpet, it’s a playroom. Carpets provide comfort and protection for kids that are crawling and playing on the floor. It also helps reduce sounds created, which is helpful for everyone else living in your home. A carpeted playroom keeps kids safe, but it will also need to be cleaned regularly to help them stay healthy.

Bedrooms

Bedrooms are a great place for carpets. The sound reduction and comfort are two very nice positives that complement bedrooms. Carpets can also make rooms warmer by insulating light and heat from the vents.

Stairs

Stairs are higher on our list because carpets provide a non-slippery surface to climb up and down. Families with small children and elderly adults especially need traction up and down stairs to avoid falls. Falling down the stairs isn’t just dangerous, it is also deadly. In 2017, the American Journal of Emergency Medicine wrote a study on stairs and falls. They found that there are millions of injuries every year from falling down the stairs and 12,000 deaths per year.

Family Rooms

Living and family rooms are often the center of activity. Similar to playrooms and bedrooms, family rooms are commonly used daily. Whether you are hosting a party, lounging around, or having a family fun night, carpets provide comfort and create a feeling of home.

Hallways

Hallways are similar to stairs, except falling is less dangerous. The downside to having carpets in hallways is that they are often walked on, matting down the carpet, trapping dirt and allergens, and making it harder to clean. However, regular vacuuming can significantly help with this issue.

Basements

Not everywhere in your basement should have carpet. The utility equipment, your furnace and air conditioner, often require a drainage area. If carpet were there, there is a high chance for the carpets to get wet and create mold. Some homes have separate rooms in the basement for utilities, so the rest of the basement is fair game for carpets. Carpets can also help keep your basement a little warmer.

Kitchens/Dining Rooms

This is the point where it’s strongly suggested to not have carpets in these rooms. Kitchens and dining rooms often have dropped food. With carpets, it is a lot more difficult to clean the crumbs and stains after a spill. A positive of having carpets in the kitchen is that it’s soft on those who do a lot of cooking, but that can also be remedied by mats. As far as the dining room goes, hard floors could get scratched by chairs, but it would take much longer to clean carpets in the area than to clean up the scratches.

Entryway/Mud Rooms

Any entry point in your home is bound to get dirty. Minnesota gets mud, slush, dirt, and so many other things from the outdoors that make quick work of dirtying up your carpets. These rooms are important to keep clean so that dirt doesn’t track in your home.

Laundry Rooms

Your washer and dryer are very likely to make your laundry room damp from the water and humidity. That means that carpets will hold onto that moisture, creating mold. Mold is very difficult to spot in carpets, which is why it’s not recommended in laundry rooms.

Bathrooms

Bathrooms are very similar to laundry rooms but on a much larger scale. Showers have a lot of moisture and humidity and are probably used more often than washers and dryers. Between that, the toilet water, and the sink water, it is very discouraged to have carpets in bathrooms. If you have carpets in your bathroom, removing it could improve the quality of your home.
