Is Humidity Bad For My Minneapolis Home's Carpets?

Mold growth

Bugs, mites, bacteria, and viruses all thrive in more humid conditions. Similar to how we get drink water to stave off thirst, the bacteria, mites, and viruses absorb the moisture in the air to stay hydrated. The more humid your home is, the more able they are to sustain themselves. Carpets are a likely place they will go for protection and warmth, but while they thrive, you and your family would pay the price. Making sure your home is not too humid will keep your family healthier throughout the summer.

Carpet formation damage

Heat often expands materials, and that is the same for your carpets. With the moisture to soften the carpets and the heat, your carpet will expand and create ripples and bumps. They are often unpleasant to look at, but they are also a tripping hazard. The damage from the raised carpets will cost you money and time to replace. Make sure to keep your carpets at a stable temperature with low humidity.

The right humidity levels

The humidity should be between 30% and 60% in your home. This is measured by the percentage of how much water vapor is in the air. If it is at 100%, it is raining. In most homes, there is a hygrometer with your heating and cooling systems that will measure the humidity. Contact your HVAC provider if you do not have one of these in your home.
