Is Humidity Bad For My Minneapolis Home's Carpets?
The blasting heat of summer is here, which also means that the humidity is back in the air. Around Minneapolis, we know it’s the humidity that can make or break how comfortable it is outdoors. Not only that, it also can make or break your carpets. If you are one to keep the windows open as long as possible, you’ll want to switch to your air conditioning when the humidity levels are high. There are a few things that will happen to your carpets if you let in the humid air.
Mold growth
Mold in your carpets is one of the biggest problems you can have. Not only does mold endanger the integrity of your carpets, it can endanger the health of you and your family. Mold comes from decaying objects outside, like fallen leaves and other dead plants. The spores then travel inside your home through the air. In most cases, it won’t find anywhere to grow and get cleaned up after you vacuum or wipe down the surfaces of your home. If your carpet is damp from being cleaned or having high humidity, however, the mold spores will find a suitable habitat in those areas and grow.
Dust buildup
Both dirt and dust build up in your carpets when there is more moisture in the air than normal. There is always some dust in your home between the dead skin cells, pet dander, fibers, dead bugs, and some soil all coming together. High levels of moisture in the air will make these heavier and stick together. You’ll know your humidity levels are high if you see clumps of dust on your furniture or there are more noticeable crunks that start to appear.
Bacteria surge
Bugs, mites, bacteria, and viruses all thrive in more humid conditions. Similar to how we get drink water to stave off thirst, the bacteria, mites, and viruses absorb the moisture in the air to stay hydrated. The more humid your home is, the more able they are to sustain themselves. Carpets are a likely place they will go for protection and warmth, but while they thrive, you and your family would pay the price. Making sure your home is not too humid will keep your family healthier throughout the summer.
Carpet formation damage
Heat often expands materials, and that is the same for your carpets. With the moisture to soften the carpets and the heat, your carpet will expand and create ripples and bumps. They are often unpleasant to look at, but they are also a tripping hazard. The damage from the raised carpets will cost you money and time to replace. Make sure to keep your carpets at a stable temperature with low humidity.
The right humidity levels
The humidity should be between 30% and 60% in your home. This is measured by the percentage of how much water vapor is in the air. If it is at 100%, it is raining. In most homes, there is a hygrometer with your heating and cooling systems that will measure the humidity. Contact your HVAC provider if you do not have one of these in your home.
