How to Life-Proof Your Upholstery

Between having kids, pets, and preferences about your furniture, making sure your upholstery is life-proof is a challenge. Every Minneapolis home is unique with different needs for each family. Breaking down what your family needs in the upholstered furniture only takes a little bit of explanation of three main circumstances to think about when looking for the right couch for your home.

Find the right upholstery

Getting the right couch or chair with upholstery starts with choosing the material. Families with pets can reference our article about best pet-friendly upholstery options. It breaks down the top three materials that can withstand any damage from claws and paws. These materials are also great for families with kids for their resistance to staining and strength of the fibers. An additional fabric that is great for couches in homes with children is polyester. This common material is also budget-friendly, giving you more wiggle room for other expenses.

Maintaining your upholstery

Maintenance includes professional cleaning, spot cleaning, and regular vacuuming. Spot cleaning should be done whenever you have a specific stain or spot on your upholstery. If you need to spot clean but aren’t sure how, check out the article we wrote on how to spot clean your upholstery. Regular vacuuming helps remove any dirt, dust, and other particles in your couch or chair, making your furniture last longer. How often you should schedule your regular vacuuming and professional carpet cleaning is explained in another article of ours. With these guides, we hope to help you maintain your furniture to last longer.

Extra protection

Small tips and tricks can be found in every corner of the internet about how to keep your furniture intact longer. Many are simple and can help, but these are the ones we’ve found to be the best ways to keep your upholstered furniture in good condition for longer.

Fluff the cushions regularly

Packed-in upholstery fibers and foam inside your upholstery trap any particles that can wear out the couch or chair faster and are more difficult to clean. By fluffing up the cushions and pillows, it will be easier to clean the dirt, dust, and particles with regular vacuuming.

Get a cover

While it may be self explanatory, a couch or chair cover can protect your upholstery from the spills, scratches, and other things life throws at your furniture. There are many types of covers, including for your outdoor furniture. Be sure to do your research on each cover to see which one best fits your family.

Tighten screws

Tightening screws has little to do with cleaning and the upholstery part of your furniture, but it might be a good idea to upkeep every part of your furniture. Over time, the screws holding together each part of your furniture can become loose. If your furniture has wooden supports, be careful when tightening screws. If the wood splits, it could create more problems in the future.
